S.O.D. has many "The Ballad of..." that are all about 8 seconds. Example: in the case of Michael Hutchence, they play a detuned bit of "I Need You Tonight". All end w/ the lyrics, "You're Dead".

I find these lyrics to be pretty compelling:

"I've got no right to have it all" by richard thompson

I wish you well
and darling keep in touch
and if he loves you
I hope he loves you as much
It's just my fantasy
you leaving him for me
I've got no right to have it all

Life's little gifts
I know I've had my share
and for a while
I know I had you there
who carries the pain
for me to love again
I've got no right to have it all

If time stopped in its tracks
is that what paradise might be
I'll cling like a drowning man
to my driftwood piece of memory
and where's the peace of mind
among the debris left behind

this is the point
where we act crazy or sane
we walk away now
never to embrace again
I'll say god bless
and wish you happiness
I've got no right to have it all

Also, I wanted to post the lyrics to "Living with the Lies" by the Canadian Subhumans' Gerry Hannah (from a 1983 Alternative Tentacles record) but I don't have it here right now, so I don't know the exact words...

Also #2: the song "Signpost" by Lungfish. Maybe I'll post that next time.

Also #3: since it's the holidays, if you like reggae, make sure you play the tune "Christmas is Cancelled" by Macka B (on the cd "global messenger")--- totally great lyrics about the commercialization of x-mess.........

"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel...

And one day we will die,
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea.
But for now we are young,
Let us lay in the sun,
And count every beautiful thing we can see.
Love to be
In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me

And...

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun.
And when we meet on a cloud,
I'll be laughing out loud,
I'll be laughing with everyone I see.
Can't believe
how strange it is to be anything at all.

it may be dumb, but i'd choose a line from "main man" by T rex:

as a child i laughed a lot
oh yes i did
yes i did...
now it seems i cry a lot
oh tell the truth
don't you?

How about Nick Lowe from 1979? From the song 'Born Fighter':

"Well, in between the pages of the glossy magazines,
Is a coffeetable-world I could never ever fit in,
I shout about how I could never buy it --
But I'll go up and fight for the right to go and try it!"
