Debacle  by Dave Materna

Punk rock is the attitude and the music of defiance, the definition of a generation that has no name. We never

actually got one neither, but many of us still play our instruments. Which is really cool. Seventeen bands and more

are left. Thirty years later. The “No-name Generation.  Who woulda thought.
These bands. This is the first time this ever happened: 17 area punk rock bands that helped pave the way for modern

music and proclaimed freedom from corporate radio are going to kick ass for two nights on the Kent Stage. It’s a

reunion, and the two night gathering is called “DEBACLE.”

These are the bands that three decades ago opened doors, or kicked ‘em in, played for beer, performed for only the

barmaid and her boyfriend at 3:00AM, hauled their own equipment if they had any, fought their way out, and had a f*#king

blast. They played wherever they could, and played whatever they wanted, at bars and clubs like The Bank, JB’s Down,

Mother’s Up, and Li’l Nick’s, among a few other places. And regardless of what the press said, (whenever there was press

besides the Akron U. Buchtelite, and Kent Stater), some bands garnered attention nation-wide, but they never got much of

a launching-pad here.Â

In spite of that, many of us old punks still walk the planet. We have, in our old age, become carpenters, teachers,

owners, married, broke, grandparents, convicts, losers, winners, and more-or-less, human now. But still, we’re punks at

heart.

This is our celebration. A toast to the Akron-Kent music scene circa 1976—1986, or there abouts. Punk rockers are

coming to Akron-Kent from as far away as Boston, Â Â Â Florida, North Carolina and Utah, and as close as right here, in

N.E. Ohio, to come home and play music together again.

It’s the event that shouldn’t be missed. By the next time it happens again, in another thirty years, there won’t

be as many bands, I’m sure, but the price at the door, no doubt, will probably cost more than five bucks. The bands

performing include:
Â
    The Bizzarros
    The Subterraneans
    Zero Defex
    Bongo’s Jungle Party
    The Attitude
    Two Worlds Collide
Joy Circuit

And many others

“DEBACLE” is not for the faint of heart, of course, and should be approached with caution. There’ll be a lot of

dancing as well, and a fair amount of confusion. And the $5.00 cover charge benefits the Western Reserve Folk Arts

Association. This experience takes place Friday, September 24, and Saturday, September 25 at the Kent Stage, 175 East

Main Street, Kent Ohio. Doors @ 6:00PM. Â
Reunion to Reignite Akron/Kent Punk Glory Days

How did youth rise above the bad reputations beset on the cities of Akron and Kent in the 70s?

Ask anyone still around who was part of the burgeoning punk/new wave scene that found it’s way into Akron and Kent more

than a quarter of a century ago and the answer will always be – original music and a place to play it.

While Kent was still reeling from the Kent State shootings that marred its campus and Akron’s rubber companies were on a

one way trip out of town, finding cheaper labor in Mexico, a fledgling music movement began to take hold in these NE

Ohio towns which would forever change the lives of its disenchanted adolescents.

Punk rock followed by new wave was about the only thing taking hold and sticking in these two dying towns. The venues

that allowed local musicians and their fans a way out, at least for a time, opened their doors. JB’s Down and Mother’s

Junction in Kent and then, The Bank Nite Club in downtown Akron, made it all possible.

Now three decades later, with The Bank long gone; a mere ghost lingering under Canal Park, JBs Down not being what it

once was, and Mothers vanished behind the pre-established name of Rays, only memories remain.

One who recalls that time, and has since taken up the cause to reignite that scene is Mary Mosher. ““A few of us have

been longing for the excitement of the (punk/new wave/alternative) music scene we once shared,” explains Mosher, who

marketed and supported local bands in Kent Ohio.”This was a big part of our lives back then, and it was, and still is,

part of our culture.”

Thanks to the ever-present walks down memory lane by a few starry-eyes dreamers, 17 of the bands who once graced or

disgraced these stages will be rekindling the fire of late night music madness with the announcement of Debacle.

The name was a tongue-in-cheek, self-depreciative label that defined previous reunion efforts which fell short of the

planning stages. This one stuck, and Mosher tells why. “We have been fortunate to gain the support of several of the

bands who were at the center of the scene.

These bands playing are doing it simply because they love playing.” Debacle is a two-night reunion compilation of

bands performing at the venerable Kent Stage in Kent at 1221 High Street. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the shows begin

each night at 7:30.

At a cost of five dollars, it is almost absurd that you can see on September 24, eight bands and for another five, nine

bands on September 25. To not make it a self-aggrandized orgy of bands and fans, the grass roots committee organizing

the event is working jointly with the Akron-Canton Food Bank.

Attendees of the show are being asked to bring food donations to the shows. Each person who donates is automatically

entered into a raffle to win band memorabilia and certificates from local establishments. Proceeds from the door will go

to help the Western Reserve Folk Arts Association and the “Old Punk Rockers’ fund”.
August 30 , 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“The Debacle Concert”

KENT (OH)—Rock reunions have become just as common as new bands forming. But what if a group of bands got back together?

What if a musical “scene” re-united?

Like a time capsule being unearthed, on September 24th and 25th, fans once again can dive head-first into the music that

ignited a generation of late Boomers and Gen X’ers. Seventeen of the most influential bands from the Akron and Kent

scene will perform live at The Kent Stage in Kent, Ohio in what is billed in fitting punk ethos as “The Debacle”.

In the northeast corner of Ohio during the late 1970’s and 80’s an original music scene was thriving in the Akron and

Kent area that came to influence the rest of the musical world. Bands like The Bizarros, 0 DFX, The Nelsons, Joy

Circuit, The Attitude, Germ Free Adolescents, and In Fear of Roses took the stage to deliver their musical

manifestations of a new, underground scene hosted at clubs like The Bank, JB’s Down, and Mother’s Junction. It was a

time before “alternative” was even a term used to describe this influential emergence of culture and music. If it wasn’t

Top 40, it was either New Wave or Punk. And if you heard it on the radio, you must have been tuned to college radio far

left on the dial.

The Debacle show begins Friday September 24th at 7:30 p.m. with a Tribute to Akron legend, the F Models’ late Ig Nition

and closes Saturday September 25th when the influential punk band Zero Defex takes the stage at 11:30 p.m. And as it

would have been in 1982, tickets are only $5. Proceeds benefit The Kent Stage, operated by the Western Reserve Folk Arts

Association, including a raffle to benefit the Akron-Canton Food Bank.

Event Schedule:
