Special Event!
Two of the best tape-manipulating experimental musicians in the world will be performing at Now That's Class on Wednesday, August 29th - Jason Lescalleet and Aaron Dilloway

Local ambient/drone synth wizards Fragments and Thursday Club will open as a quartet, and Nathan Lewis will be spinning records before the show and between sets.

JASON LESCALLEET (Maine)
Lescalleet's sound world occupies a space between noise, contemporary composition, and minimal electronics. Using decidedly primitive tactics and equipment (e.g. antiquated reel-to-reel recorders, damaged tape, etc.), his work focuses on extreme frequencies and microscopic audio detail. His live performances are utterly mindblowing.

Jason Lescalleet is an exciting tape-music artist. He's been a member of Due Process, performed and recorded with Keith Rowe, Joe Colley, Jason Kahn, John Hudak, Bhob Rainey and Greg Kelley (both separately and as Nmperign), and most recently Aaron Dilloway and Graham Lambkin, which has yielded unprecedented and glorious results in the electroacoustic music of today. Lescalleet lives and works in the state of Maine.

AARON DILLOWAY (Ohio - ex-Wolf Eyes; Hanson Records label head)
Phenomenal live performer and recording artist, Aaron utilizes magnetic tape, synths, contact mic growls, and various other electronics and evocative sounds to create experimental noise and electronic sets that tend to start with a slow burn and build to mindmelting climaxes of intense energy and catharsis. A very physical and versatile performer, Aaron has shared the stage and collaborated with a who's who in noise and experimental electronic sound, with audiences likely to walk away from his sets completely dumbfounded.

"Urban guerilla, sociopath, sexual deviant, blasphemer: these are the subversive personas that have dominated noise music since its outgrowth from industrial culture in the '80s. Yet none of them have ever found much resonance with Aaron Dilloway. His myriad projects, from The Beast People to Wolf Eyes, have always reflected his fascination with the trickster, that folkloric rogue and saboteur of law and order. It's a fascination reaching back to the noise pioneer's formative years in the Ann Arbor-Detroit underground of the mid-'90s, a scene whose quirkiness owed a great deal to the Discordian mischief of Sun City Girls, The Residents and Caroliner.

It should come as no surprise then that his most ambitious release to date, a three-years-in-the-making concept album, arrives with the all too fitting title Modern Jester. Over the course of its four sprawling sides, Dilloway relentlessly upends and disrupts listener perception, in particular the either/or logic governing it. His weapon of choice is the tape loop, albeit loopage that is mangled, wire-fried and intensely lo-fi. By constructing repetition-based music riddled with distinctive imperfections, one of the many results Dilloway achieves is a collapsing of the dichotomy between predictability and randomness." - Justin Farrar, Resident Advisor
Two of Ohio's best ambient drone noise bands are going to team up as a quartet for this special show. Sublime synth wizards.
SCARCITY OF TANKS, © Michael Paterson, 2011

******************************************************************************************************************************************
Tony Maimone interviewed by Mike DeCapite, from [www.nadir-novelties.net] :

I feel like I've almost come full circle from the early seventies. I used to turn off the lights and play the piano, and that's "Dub Housing". I used to come home late at night and turn on an amp and play, and that's the beginning of "Codex". That stuff was really influenced by my surroundings.
Personally I was really influenced by what I was listening to. You'd never know that I was listening to reggae and Miles Davis and Bob Dylan, but… Playing with Bob Kidney had a big influence on me, too. We'd sit out in his backyard and really go over those Robert Johnson tunes.

When?

This was later, maybe early '80s. I probably met him in the late seventies and by the early '80s I was playing with him. He wanted me to join his band, but I was touring with Ubu and I didn't really want to stop doing that.

I think what I was asking was more about when you guys started writing music and would get together to put together songs, you guys were trying to recreate the atmosphere of your lives at that point, and…

Let me just stop you. The first place we ever rehearsed at was in that building over on Euclid Avenue around 62nd. It was a small room and it was dark in there, and it felt like the heart of Cleveland. And I think organically songs like "Sentimental Journey" came straight from that dark room with everybody being in there, looking into themselves, listening to what was going on around them and reacting to it.

There's something about those first albums. Like "Dub Housing"---what does that mean but hearing what everybody around you is doing? There's Tony on the other side of the wall playing piano with the lights off---"Dub Housing". It's all about you guys trying to recreate your environment and giving it some shape.

Jazz-Fusion All-Star Trio Scott Henderson Jeff Berlin Mike Clark To Play Cleveland (1 reply)

One of the most highly anticipated tours of 2011 featuring jazz-fusion legends Scott Henderson, Jeff Berlin and Mike Clark will commence on Sept 14th. The power trio promises to deliver an evening full of depth-defying virtuosic performances guaranteed to thrill and inspire all that attend. “Henderson-Berlin-Clark are the Clapton-Bruce-Baker of fusion music!” says Jeff Berlin. The trio will be playing The Winchester in Cleveland on Sept. 28th.

Scott Henderson is considered one of the premier jazz-fusion guitarists performing on the planet today. Although Henderson claims to be more of a blues-rock player, with influences like Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix and Ritchie Blackmore, it was the influence of jazz that led him to the style of playing and composing he is now famous for. Henderson has recorded and toured with such notable artists as Chick Corea's Elektric Band, Jean-Luc Ponty, Jeff Berlin and 'Players', and a four year stint with Weather Report legend Joe Zawinul. He formed the band Tribal Tech in 1984 with bassist Gary Willis, and recorded nine critically acclaimed albums. In 1991 Scott Henderson was named by Guitar World as the #1 Jazz Guitarist, and in January 1992 he was named #1 Jazz Guitarist in Guitar Player's Annual Reader's Poll. Henderson has also released three well-received solo albums as well as two releases with Vital Tech Tones, a trio collaboration with bassist Victor Wooten and ex-Journey/Vital Information leader Steve Smith on drums. As is often the case with a musician of Scott's caliber, the demand is great that he share his knowledge with the current generation of guitarists. He is on the faculty at Musician's Institute in Hollywood, and has written columns for Guitar Player, Guitar World and Guitar School magazines.

Jeff Berlin is a legend of the electric bass, considered by many to be the finest electric bass player in the world. A true master of the bass, Jeff Berlin has played with the likes of Bill Bruford, Alan Holdsworth, AWBH and George Benson. Jeff Berlin's resume reads like the who's who of the higher echelon of music artists. Jeff Berlin was even asked to join Van Halen, an invitation that he actually turned down. Not only is Jeff Berlin a innovator in the jazz field, but rock players are constantly siting him as their major influence. Carlos Santana called Jeff the “best bassist in the world”, while Rush’s Geddy Lee used the phrase “best bassist on the planet!” Jeff Berlin's innovative bass playing has influenced a generation of bass players world-wide. He was voted #1 Jazz Bassist by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine. Jeff also pioneered a technique called 'two handed tapping', when he performed this style on the track "Motherlode" from his 1985 debut solo album called 'Champion'. The founder of The Players School of Music in Clearwater, Florida, Jeff has also been at the forefront of music education for almost 30 years. His columns in Guitar Player and Bass Player magazines were the most read columns due to their controversial content of music education. Jeff single-handedly has re-vamped music education by dismissing popular methods of learning such as using electronic tuners, metronomes, handgrips, tablature, or any study method that does not include musical content.

What can be said about Mike Clark except that he is a true drum legend! Mike Clark gained worldwide recognition as one of America’s foremost jazz and funk drummers while playing with Herbie Hancock’s group in the early 1970’s. Mike became known as a major innovator through his incisive playing on Hancock’s 'Thrust' album, which garnered him an international cult following. While often referred to as the “Tony Williams of funk”, Mike considers himself a jazz drummer, and in fact has become one of the most vital to sit behind a set. He's performed with jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker, Vince Guaraldi, Tony Bennett, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Eddie Henderson, Rob Dixon, Bobby Hutcherson, Woody Shaw, Donald Harrison, Larry Coryell, Jack Wilkins, Mike Wolff, Wallace Roney, Geri Allen, Billy Childs, James Genus, Bob Hurst, Chris Potter, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Dave Liebman, Nat Adderly, Oscar Brown Jr., Bill Doggett, Nicholas Payton, Christian McBride, Mose Allison, Maxine Brown, Gil Evans and his orchestra and many illuminating etceteras too numerous to list.

And now, these three legends of jazz-fusion have come together to form a supergroup that will no less than amaze all who attend their dynamic performances.

Sunday April 21st - JANDEK performs at The Beachland Ballroom! (no replies)

AN EVENING WITH JANDEK: CLEVELAND SUNDAY

Sunday August 21, 2011
Beachland Ballroom - 15711 Waterloo Rd - Cleveland, OH
$15 - Doors at 8:30pm, Concert Begins at 9:00pm
Tickets available at Ticketweb

A rare solo appearance by JANDEK. There will be no opening bands.

This is the first time Jandek will have performed a solo acoustic show in the United States, and the third time ever of his performing a solo acoustic set in the history of his performances. This means that the Representative of Corwood will not be accompanied by any other performers, and will be performing on acoustic guitar.

Biographical information:

Jandek is the musical project of an outsider musician who operates out of Houston, Texas. Since 1978, Jandek has self-released over 60 albums of unusual, often emotionally dissolute folk and blues songs without providing any biographical information and having only ever granted two interviews. Jandek often plays a highly idiosyncratic and frequently atonal form of folk and blues music, often using an open and unconventional chord structure. Jandek's music is unique, but the lyrics closely mirror the country blues and folk traditions of East Texas.

Officially, Jandek is not a person. Albums and live performances are credited to "Jandek", but the man on the album covers and on stage is "a representative from Corwood Industries". Corwood is the record label; "Jandek" is the musical project. Both are directed by the same individual. The trinity of Jandek, Corwood, and "the representative" is both three and one.

The enigmatic musician has also been the subject of a feature-length documentary film, Jandek on Corwood, which features interviews with music critics, obsessed fans and musicians.

In an issue of Spin circa 1993, Kurt Cobain said "He's not pretentious, but only pretentious people like his music."
Ken Vandermark (saxophones/clarinets) and Tim Daisy (percussion) have been performing, recording, and touring together in a number of critically acclaimed groups since 2001; these ensembles include the Vandermark 5, the Frame Quartet, Sound In Action Trio, Bridge 61, the Resonance Project, and Index Orkest.

Performing in the unique format of a reed/drum duo, they concentrate on investigating free improvisation from the standpoint of rhythmic melodicism; following an international tradition that's been developed by artists such as Don Cherry/Ed Blackwell, Anthony Braxton/Max Roach, Evan Parker/Paul Lytton, and Peter Brotzmann/Han Bennink.

In this band Tim and Ken draw on a number of musical influences, including many sources outside the Jazz lexicon, for example: percussion music from Africa and South America, New Music ideas of composers like Morton Feldman and John Cage, popular music forms such as Funk and Rock. Together they combine their creative energies to further explore and assemble sound in an open, completely improvised context.

Through regular performances in their home city, the duo developed a special level of communication and invention. The excitement of the group warranted documentation and a desire to bring the music to audiences outside of Chicago.

This Cleveland show marks the 11th stop on a 14 day tour of the United States in support of their new release, "The Conversation" available in early July on Multi Kulti Records. This will be Ken and Tim's 3rd tour as a duo and will also mark their 3rd release following 2007's self release "August Music" and 2008's double LP "Light On The Wall" on Laurence Family Records.
