=============================

[PAUL METZGER]
From St. Paul, MN. Locust Records.

"Paul Metzger has graced Minneapolis with his guitar and banjo playing in various contexts for over twenty years, but this is the first time I've encountered him. On the strength of his side-long performance here, that's a serious deficit. Many Westerners borrow a few elements from raga styles, and a few musicians from other disciplines are serious students of Hindustani and Carnatic lore, but Metzger's guitar playing sounds like the real thing. And yet it's true to the what-the-fuck spirit that's motivated the best punk, jazz, and free music of any stripe. John McLaughlin had his guitar fitted with scalloped frets and sympathetic strings; Metzger has pimped his ride with music boxes. They somehow keep up a running dialog with his dramatic strums and swooning slide licks that sounds so a propos that the word gimmick never finds its way into the conversation. "August," which also lasts the whole side, is like a long fading glow, a sunset raga worth returning to over and over again." - Bill Meyer, Signal to Noise

[BBOB DRAKE / ANDREW KLIMEK DUO]
From Cleveland, Ohio.

Two of the most interesting Cleveland musicians who have been refining their craft since the 1970s. See Klimek's "Afterbathinginturpentine" - 7" Mustard 105, 1979 PS (Anna Told / Drapery Hooks Of My Love // Felt Hammer) or any of Drake's fluxmonkey recordings and poetry books.

[NATE SCHEIBLE / MATTHEW WASCOVICH / DAN WENNINGER TRIO ]
From Cleveland, Ohio.

Drum, guitar/vocal, saxophone trio playing songs at a highly competent level after being on tour in Cleveland of open mic nights for the last 30 days straight. Wet powder music. Guitar tuned E-A-D-G-B-E. Drums tuned to G. Saxophone tuned to the key of Wenninger. Mirrors for the fuckface.

[TED FLYNN / KATHERINE KOENIG DUO]
From Cleveland, Ohio.

Ted from Theodore Vril and Katherine from Drake / Koenig / Pickering Trio playing old rag time tunes. First public performance as duo. Smartest duo in Cleveland.

[JOSE LUNA / KAT STEWART DUO]
From Cleveland, Ohio.

Jose of George Orwell and Kat of Iron Oxide. Drum and bass/electronics. First public performance as duo. As intense as Death Metal.

Some Paul Metzger news:

He contributes to a new project on Honest Jon's (I got this info from Downtown Music Gallery's website, dtmgallery.com):

OPEN STRINGS [V.A.] - 1920s Middle Eastern Recordings + New Responses [2 CD set] (Honest Jon's 039; UK) This is the fourth release in Honest Jon's series of albums exploring the earliest 78s held in the EMI Hayes Archive. Open Strings is a dazzling selection of virtuoso string-playing from Egypt, Iran, Iraq and Turkey, all recorded in the 1920s, and pretty much unheard ever since. In addition, Open Strings includes a disc of newly-commissioned responses to the themes in this music by underground luminaries committed to the drone such as Sir Richard Bishop of legendary Sun City Girls renown, West Coast psych-guitarist Ben Chasny aka Six Organs Of Admittance, UK folk-guitarist Rick Tomlinson aka Voice Of The Seven Woods, and Western Massachusetts' raga-inspired duo, MV And EE. From resonant bow-drone, to frenetic fret-runs to delicate, circular acoustic musings to sitar fever-dreams, no matter the nationality, there is a resonance and truth in this music that is ancient, timeless and transcendent. Scorchers past and present, every one. Other artists include: Micah Blue Smaldone, Michael Flower, Charlie Parr, Bruce Licher, Paul Metzger, and Steffen Basho-Junghans.
