It was one of the great April Fool's Day pranks. The good Doktor said he'd have to leave his program because of a long-standing, life-threatening cocaine addiction. It wasn't true, of course, but his delivery was so convincing that he had several listeners (including me) fooled for several minutes. We were all played by a master. Comments, anyone?
