And now I'll talk about -- PEDRO! BOYS' LIFE'S mascot from seemingly the beginning has been Pedro the Mail-Burro, and BL has been as fond of him as Disney has been fond of Mickey Mouse. But for the longest time Pedro had never had a comic-strip of his own in the mag. For much of BL's existence, Pedro's major province was the mag's mail-page, known as "The Hitchin' Rack". First things first. I began my association with BOYS' LIFE around 1963, when I followed an ill-advised urge to join the Cub Scouts. Mercifully, I came to my senses before actually getting much beyond that, but I would still encounter monthly copies of BL in sundry libraries during school right up to my high school graduation. I should have known ... The "Big Chuck and Little John Show" on Saturdays is just a half-hour of rerun skits with no movie. And now "Elvira" is no longer on THIS. Svengoolie is pretty good, but it still galls me that Cleveland has essentially abandoned its own movie-host traditions. Who would have thought it? Svengoolie, formerly known as Son of Svengoolie, is now broadcasting his horror-movie host show on Cleveland's new Channel 19.2, ME-TV. I didn't even know Svengoolie was still haunting his home-airwaves out in Chicago (ME-TV is a syndicated "oldies" network from out of Chicago -- something like Channel 8.2's Antenna-TV). Yeah, I saw part of last week's show. She still looks pretty good, bless her, and she can still do pretty well with the one-liners. But I still much prefer the virtually no-holds-barred zaniness which for so many decades defined Cleveland's local movie-host programmes. Indeed, a large part of Elvira's appeal is that she is so safe. No unlicensed karaoke to copywritten music. No comedy skits showiby baronightwolf - Anything Goes

I better let you folks know that I was so impressed by this year's WCSB Halloween party that I contacted Detroit's legendary 3-D Invisibles to inquire as to whether they could perform at our next WCSB Halloween bash in 2011 (it would be the 3rd party, so a "3-D" Halloween band would be most appropriate,eh?). Yeesh! Those are those old pre-recorded shows from I.V.E. from back in the 1980s, right? Forgive my grousing, but you know I've been trying to create my own movie-host show here in Cleve for the past twenty years, so I can't help but find it galling that the local movie-host traditions have become eradicated by nationally-syndicated stuff like this. And if memory serves me correctly, that's the same highrise that's been in the news recently because East Cleveland's mayor is a resident there, etc., etc. When it rains, it snows.
