And now I'll talk about -- PEDRO!
BOYS' LIFE'S mascot from seemingly the beginning has been Pedro the Mail-Burro, and BL has been as fond of him as Disney has been fond of Mickey Mouse. But for the longest time Pedro had never had a comic-strip of his own in the mag. For much of BL's existence, Pedro's major province was the mag's mail-page, known as "The Hitchin' Rack". Apparently from the ve

In this installment, True Believers, I need to correct the previous statement about here being essentially FOUR categories of comic-strips in BOYS' LIFE. The actual number of categories can be construed as either SIX or SEVEN, depending upon one's notions of "comic-strips". Suffice to say that besides the aforementioned categories above, one might also include: literary adaptations, illustrations

First things first.
I began my association with BOYS' LIFE around 1963, when I followed an ill-advised urge to join the Cub Scouts. Mercifully, I came to my senses before actually getting much beyond that, but I would still encounter monthly copies of BL in sundry libraries during school right up to my high school graduation. I don't remember encountering the mag at all during the 80s and 90s,

Those of us who were once Boy Scouts -- or at least had the misguided notion at any time in our lives of joining them -- all remember BOYS' LIFE ... which was essentially intended as a version of LIFE Magazine for Boy Scouts. Well, those of us who have ever read it were most usually LESS concerned about all the articles about camping and medals and leadership and living off the land than we were

Apparently Svengoolie was only on THIS for one show for Halloween.
He's still on Saturday nights on ME-TV, though.

It makes for a great Christmas present. I have relatives who would LOVE it. Hope it's available for the Yuletide.

And this just in:
THIS-TV seems to have picked up Svengoolie as well.
Why couldn't a Cleveland-based movie host be so lucky?

I should have known ...
The "Big Chuck and Little John Show" on Saturdays is just a half-hour of rerun skits with no movie.
And now "Elvira" is no longer on THIS.
Svengoolie is pretty good, but it still galls me that Cleveland has essentially abandoned its own movie-host traditions.
Ah well, who knows what tomorrow will bring, eh?

And now I hear Big Chuck and Little John are back on Saturday mornings.
If this is true, it just might be that I will eventually have my own show at last: BARON NIGHTWOLF AND HIS FRIENDS OF REVENGE!
Well, at least I can hope ...

Er, one correction:
Svengoolie actually happens to be on ME-19 10 PM - Midnight on SATURDAY.
Not Friday.
And while I'm at it, the rubber-chicken dummy/puppet's name is spelled "Kerwin".
Mea culpa ...

Who would have thought it? Svengoolie, formerly known as Son of Svengoolie, is now broadcasting his horror-movie host show on Cleveland's new Channel 19.2, ME-TV. I didn't even know Svengoolie was still haunting his home-airwaves out in Chicago (ME-TV is a syndicated "oldies" network from out of Chicago -- something like Channel 8.2's Antenna-TV). His programme is broadcast in Cleveland from 10 P

Yeah, I saw part of last week's show. She still looks pretty good, bless her, and she can still do pretty well with the one-liners. But I still much prefer the virtually no-holds-barred zaniness which for so many decades defined Cleveland's local movie-host programmes. Indeed, a large part of Elvira's appeal is that she is so safe. No unlicensed karaoke to copywritten music. No comedy skits showi

I better let you folks know that I was so impressed by this year's WCSB Halloween party that I contacted Detroit's legendary 3-D Invisibles to inquire as to whether they could perform at our next WCSB Halloween bash in 2011 (it would be the 3rd party, so a "3-D" Halloween band would be most appropriate,eh?). They told me to contact them in the following summer, but I wanted to get the ball rollin

Oh, wait a minute. Did you say they were airing new shows?
New for Cleveland, or do you mean contemporary?
If the latter, I had no ideal Cassandra Peterson was still in the business.
Or it is Ms. Peterson still playing the character or it is now someone else ?

Yeesh! Those are those old pre-recorded shows from I.V.E. from back in the 1980s, right?
Forgive my grousing, but you know I've been trying to create my own movie-host show here in Cleve for the past twenty years, so I can't help but find it galling that the local movie-host traditions have become eradicated by nationally-syndicated stuff like this. No offense against Elvira, but it just isn't t

It's two months late, but here's my customary eulogy:
The path you walked was thorny through no fault of your own,
But as the rain enters the soil, the river enters the sea,
And tears run to a predestined end ...
Find peace for eternity, my son ...

That's a tough break, friend. And if memory serves me correctly, that's the same highrise that's been in the news recently because East Cleveland's mayor is a resident there, etc., etc.
When it rains, it snows.
It's like that time years ago when our own transmitter was struck by lightning.
Hope WRUW is up and on the air again soon.
And thank God the ruddy FCC hasn't shut down college-

OK, people -- I've finally found out the who, where, what, and why on THE MEAN FARMER SHOW.
THE MEAN FARMER is but one of several concepts/characters created by an Omaha, Nebraska-based deejay named OTIS TWELVE. Yeah, apparently that's his real name. He has apparently been around on such Nebraska radio stations as Z-92, KFAB, KKAR, and CD 105.9 since the 1970s, and had acquired some notoriety

HALLOWEEN 2008 IS JUST TWO MONTHS AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And it's our first one from the Cole Center (I hope)!
And hey -- here are a few more recent additions for Halloween playlists:
"Juliet Of The Spirits", by the B-52s; off their latest: 'FUNFLICKS'.
"Don't Ask, Don't Tell", by Michelle Shocked.
That last song is a delightfully creepy oddity wherein Shelley

That would sure be cool.
I also recall yet another show-segue-ident that was really great: the one wherein Doug Gilliard's 'TWENTIETH CENTURY GROOVE ANGEL' announced its new time-slot with a REALLY GREAT song:
"'Twentieth Century Groove Angel' has moved, has moved ... lemme tell ya 'bout it."

Hey, wish me luck. I'm petitoning WUAB-my43 to let me be Cleveland's next movie host. And if I swing it, I really would like to have 'CSB assist with music and personalities. After all, you guys have always been there for me, so it's only fair I try to open up new possibilities for YOU.
WISH ME LUCK!
