News

Dear listeners,

What started as a 10 watt student-run radio station on May 10, 1976 (from the ashes of a prior closed-circuit station that could only be heard on campus buildings), WCSB 89.FM has evolved into a diverse community-focused non-for-profit terrestrial radio station that has pivoted into the modern era with a wide selection of streaming programs found 24 hours a day at www.wcsb.org.

Operated and run by a diverse mix of volunteers from the community (including numerous Cleveland State University alumni – some of whom have been at the station for decades) and current students, WCSB serves a need for programming that can be found nowhere else on Cleveland’s airwaves.  A quick glance at WCSB’s current programming schedule highlights Slovenian, German, Asian, Jamaican, Latin, Hungarian, Polish and Arabic programming in addition to an assortment of jazz, blues, soul, hip-hop, freeform, experimental, talk, and public affairs programs.  WCSB gives its listeners what a streaming service algorithm cannot: programming as diverse and eclectic as the audience.

Since 1984, WCSB has hosted an annual Radiothon fundraiser (except for 2020 when the station broadcast remotely during lockdown) to raise money for essential upgrades to equipment and make purchases for its one-of-a-kind music library.  During Radiothon, listeners are asked to support the station and their favorite programs with an annual contribution.

As with past years, phone banks will be staffed by station volunteers during Radiothon week (November 13th through 2pm on November 20th, 2022). Station supporters can call (216) 687-6900 during Radiothon and make a pledge. Station supporters can also pledge to WCSB through a secure credit card donations page or send a check payable to WCSB/CSU Foundation, PO Box 931848, Cleveland, OH 44101-8656.

Along with the improved studio facilities, production space, and live room that came with the move from Rhodes Tower to the Cole Center in 2008, the wide variety of premiums offered during Radiothon has increased exponentially as well.  In addition to standard mugs, pint glasses, shirts, beer koozies, sweatshirts, and the like from years past years, Radiothon premiums have expanded into sweatpants, messenger bags, enamel pins, embroidered flat brim baseball caps, socks, a holiday ornament, and a piece of baby clothing.

Station supporters will be able to pick up their premiums in person at one of two Open Houses on December 2nd from 5pm-9pm or December 4th from 12pm-4pm and meet some of their favorite WCSB programmers and other listeners as well.
