ARCHIVE!!!

Hy!

I like this radio station. I am in Hungary and it have a big FUN 'CLUB' of this station.
We interesting for the radio archive.
How can we listen the old WCSB...

wE ARE NOT ARCHIVING ANYTHING CURRENTLY. aS FAR AS "THE OLD" WCSB, IT WAS IN THE DAYS BEFORE WEBSTREAMING.

We actually do have some archived material although sadly most of it is on Reel to Reel Tape at this point. We have a few tapes in the listening room in the filing cabinet by the microwave and a few more in one of the offices. Reel to reel is far way from digital though and we can't do anything about it until our CD burner comes back from being repaired. Of course after that we probably still don't have a shot at putting it all up online because of the US Congress and the Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

There are plenty of programmers that record their shows on a regular basis. If you ask nicely someone might be willing to send you a cd or an mp3 of a past show.

It would be great if we could have an audio-archive like WRUW does, but as yet their archive is only accessible FOR ONE WEEK after a given show is first aired. It would be great if we could archive shows INDEFINITELY, but this is not yet the case at 'RUW. As for 'CSB, we will have to be able to AFFORD such a service first. Why can't one of us ultra-devoted fans win the MegaMillions?! Believe me, if I did, I'D get you folks an archive -- SCOUT'S HONOR!

We are perfectly capable in doing so. We can easily set it up. The reason why we don't do it is because of Sound Exchange. Now if you are asking how come WRUW does it and we don't... well I am not at liberty to say.

WFMU also has a great archive, of shows in many
genres, and possibly anti-genres, at wfmu.org.

11 U.S.C. 114 requires that any on-demand program archive be at least five hours long and cannot be available for download longer than two weeks. WCSB has two-hour program blocks, but the DMCA prohibits us from having individual two-hour shows available for download. Our archives would have to be at least five-hour blocks (two and a half shows).

The rationale for this is that people aren't willing to sit through a five-hour archive just to hear one particular song that they liked, so therefore they'd be more willing to go out and buy the album/song they just heard.

Other stations have individual shows for download because a) they probably don't know about the law, and b) the law isn't enforced. Even though the law isn't currently enforced, WCSB has chosen to abide by it. If we wanted we could still do six-hour archives of three shows combined, but that's kinda lame. And not worth the maintenance.

I know this won't add much to the conversation, but I have to say it: <i><b>SOUND EXCHANGE SUCKS.</i></b> It's just another tool in Big Business' attempt to control--well, everything.
