Immigration Reform Meeting
September 28, 2007 10:42AM
Join Ohio Advocacy Groups for a Statewide Day of Action

and Strategy Meeting on Immigration Issues

Strategy Meeting: Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (lunch provided)

Location: West Shore Unitarian Church, 20401 Hilliard Blvd., Rocky River, Ohio 44116

Day of Action: October 24, 2007, Columbus, Ohio.

Mark your calendars

Dear Community Organization:

Since our first Immigration Summit on Aug. 17, there has been another large-scale raid on immigrant poultry workers in Butler County. And now the State Rep. from Butler County, Courtney Combs, has introduced an anti-immigrant bill—events we predicted would occur here in Ohio. Given the anti-immigrant climate, there is no doubt that more raids on low-wage immigrant workers, and harsh measures will continue if we don’t work together now. You are a crucial partner in creating a multi-ethnic, multi-denominational defense network for immigrants in Ohio. Please join us for our second strategy meeting set for Oct. 17, at West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, 20401 Hilliard Blvd., Rocky River.

Special Guests include:

Flavia Jimenez, Esq., Senior Immigration Policy Analyst, with the National Council of La Raza (NCLR).

NCLR is the largest Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States. Flavia has been a key advocate helping form grassroots strategy and outreach to groups around the country dealing with anti-immigrant measures.

And:

The American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU has been at the forefront of groundbreaking Immigrant’s Rights litigation challenging unconstitutional laws and practices.

The purpose of the strategy meeting is to: Prepare for the statewide day of action set for Oct. 24th.

We will plan logistics, such as bus travel from Cleveland, determine which legislators will be visited, refine our message, and select group leaders. The plan is to have groups of four or five visit key legislators. We want our officials to know that there is a coalition of concerned citizens and organizations advocating for immigrants and their families.

Please Note: The Day of Action will have an educational component. We are inviting Latino students to participate in the process in order to learn about lobbying for issues, learn about government and meet state officials. We will be assigning students to each group, so please join us and help make this a successful and educational experience for our future leaders!

Please RSVP for the strategy session by responding to this email as soon as you can. Lunch will be provided at the strategy meeting.

If you cannot make it to the strategy meeting (for example, groups in Butler County, Dayton, Columbus) but will join us in Columbus for the Day of Action, please contact Veronica Isabel Dahlberg at (440) 812 – 4626 for updates and info.

Sincerely, Veronica

Note: There will also be Day of Action sign-up sheets at the Oct. 6 Immigration Conference in Cleveland.
